One of numerous published submissions to my high school literary magazine, Page One. It's also one of the poems I wrote purely based on a romance novel I'd read...I had no experience in this department when I wrote it. It's also one of the few rhyming poems I've ever written. 1989
Summer ended with a sorrowful sigh
That warm afternoon when we said goodbye,
With a kiss farewell and a vow to write,
I stared at your car as you drove beyond sight.
Silently wishing for what could not be,
I turned back to the cabin for a last look-see.
My things were packed and ready to go;
Still, I lingered, prolonging my woe.
Here, in the calm of this cabin by the lake,
I recall times of laughing till our sides ached,
The tender moments by pale moonlight,
And of sweet summer loving into the night.
Of three months we spent on a summer's romance,
What's left are the tokens of a taken chance.
Falling in love with you ne'er crossed my mind:
A better lover than you I'll never find.
With you, I found a slice of paradise.
Given the chance, I'd gladly love you twice.
Meeting you is something I do not regret:
Loving you made a summer I will not forget.
