crystal

Inspired by a friend contemplating divorce and originally written while on FTX at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Thanks to Andy Lybarger for the title. This remains one of my favorites. ©1994
in the street
of life
you're cruising in a thick fog
and you don't see the brick wall
until even antilock brakes don't work
in purgatory your
love remains
impatiently you wait for heaven to decide
when all this hell will end
but the jury is damned from the start
she was every
reason you became
the kind of prince of her dreams
but now the throne's been stolen 'neath your feet
and somehow what you've done doesn't seem to matter
she had every
right to your time
the kind you spent making a better life
but now the minutes are winding down to zero
and lately it seems your world ended years ago
in your brighter
moments you dream
that she'll be waiting like she used to
once upon a time that maybe never was
and the tide will turn your way this time
in your mind's
best thoughts
you have it all planned out, how this will work
once the puzzle pieces magically rearrange themselves
and the vision of the future becomes crystal clear
