familiar stranger

by Raine Wynd

love is a familiar stranger
seated across the living room
watching a show I claim to hate
and saying nothing I need to hear
(we never kiss hello or goodbye)

this isn't quite the dream I wanted
back when I played with my Barbies
and looked to my parents for their example
they made saying "I love you" look easy
but they never said staying took work
(they always kissed hello and goodbye)

love is a familiar stranger
driving our almost-paid-up car
down a road we've traveled many times
and getting us utterly lost
(we had it all mapped out)

this isn't quite the journey I wanted
back when company sounded like a good idea
on the road less traveled by
guess I forgot that the warning sign road crew
doesn't mark the less beaten path as well
(they warned us to be careful)

now love is a familiar stranger
staring at me with confused eyes
not comprehending why I'm so emotional
over something as simple as a kiss goodnight
(no one said you'd steal my heart twice)
