Ivy and Oak

Your faithful love was the ivy that embraced the oak of her compassion
Happily you lent her the comfort of your arms
But in time she said your vines damaged her strength
And that your many leaves shadowed out the sun
She claimed she couldn’t feel the warmth anymore
And offered to transplant you into a different corner of the garden
You’d built so carefully out of the dreams you shared
You thought she’d be happy if you just stayed close
Then you woke up one day to see she’d planted her roots outside of the gate
And that your own had been hacked to into a thousand fragments
Winter had graced the garden with its bitter frost
And you had nothing to give you sustenance and support
Even as you could see her blossoming in the sun
