missed opportunity

What do you say when you discover that someone you once dated had actually fallen in love with you, but decided not to tell you until it was far too late for you to do anything about it, even if you wanted to? ©12/25/97

half in love with you from the moment we touched,

too proud to admit my need,

thought i'd tried and been shot down

so i left it buried under years

of just being your friend who knew a little too much

about how you tasted when you kissed

how was i to see how you felt about me?

i was too wrapped up in falling in love with other people

and a bit too good at hiding my own feelings

as i lived out my nightmares and my dreams

i thought we'd have forever to work it out

and maybe you weren't the one but you were in the running

and now that you're with her and she's said yes

you tell me it's time to tie up some loose ends

and we can't be friends anymore cos it wouldn't be right

i don't understand so i ask why

that's when you finally reveal your heart to me

what the hell do you expect me to say now?

you look at me like i should take what you just said

as if you'd just told me i should take an umbrella with me

because the weatherman said there's a 60% chance of rain

you've forever shattered a mystery

the faint hope i'd harbored deep inside

that someday you'd feel the same way

and today i'd be your bride instead of her

i am left feeling bitterly angry

and achingly numb to the bone

and you stand there uncomprehendingly

as she walks up to us with a smile

greeting me like the trusted friend

i've always been in her eyes

and instantly i feel sorry for her

knowing it's my ghost she'll be fighting

in that bed of yours tonight and for always
