It wasn't the six-pack you drank that fateful night
or the wrong color of roses you sent me in apology
or the fact you never finished college
that made me fall out of love with you

It wasn't the unfailing way you'd remember our engagement
or how you'd easily forgive me for forgetting our anniversary
or the painful secrets that we kept between us
that made me start to wonder if I should stay

It wasn't your instinctive gift for logic
or your enthusiastic affection for digital TV
or the early mornings you'd wake me up by doing laundry
that made me believe I was better off elsewhere:

It was the nights I spent hoping for a piece of your time
the hours I wasted trying to find the right moment
to share something of myself with you
and it's far too late to make amends
