I wrote this poem for Dana Woods one night, and since I'm not one to sit on my work very long without wanting to share it with other people, I decided to post it.
everywhere you look, the memories remain
places you've laughed and cried and dreamed
and you used to think that you'd always be
standing with your feet like roots
and then life threw you onto the Tilt-a-Wheel
now the only thing you're sure of
is that you don't belong here anymore
the city's a labyrinth of strangers
some of them you even call friends
and you used to think that that was a good thing
but you watch them interacting now
while you marvel at how inane they seem
and you wonder what that makes you
if someone were to judge you by the company you keep
everywhere you go the feelings remain
echoes of joy and pain and wonder
and you used to believe that was how
everything was supposed to work
and then life threw you onto the Tilt-a-Wheel
now the only thing you're certain of
is that you're not sure what to feel anymore
the city's a murky bog of stories
some of them you know by heart
and you used to relish the grittier ones
but lately you wonder if yours is an old tale
and you can't help but think that you missed the warning signs
that being grown-up isn't as much fun as it looked when you were
a child
and that a heart can change in a single instant
