Three Words

by Raine Wynd

I can't believe I'm standing here again
Right on the edge of a heartbreak
You say I've been leaving you behind for some time
And that our lives are running down nonparallel paths
You say love's more than living in the same house
And you'd rather set me free than watch me pull at the bit
I don't even know the words to put this ache in place
I've been here before but it doesn't make it easier

I could've sworn that this time would be different
We had so much strength and stubborn pride
But when passion fades away and you're left holding the pieces
How the hell can you bridge the gulf that's crept up
Between what we used to have and what we thought we were
And the expectations and dreams we'd once shared
Is it enough to stay friends and be content with less
When both of us are dying somewhere deep inside?

I've had enough of deep conversation
And you're gotten tired of fighting the silence
Where can you go when all that's left is your past
And it's the past that's causing all the pain
I've long since escaped into worlds of fantasy
And you're drowning your sorrows in liters of Guinness
We used to meet in the middle
And now neither of us knows where the hell that is

All I know is that I'm not giving up just yet
And your greatest fear is that you'll lose me
But I sometimes think you've already driven me away
And I'm just waiting for the bus ticket to come home
You ask me questions I thought I had the answers to
But the responses I had don't seem to suit you anymore
And I don't know what to tell you
Now that three words aren't enough
