when you look at her now

Inspired by a friend contemplating divorce. 1997

when you look at her now
you remember a time when she wore jewelry
and spent hours in the bathroom making herself up
and you'd complain about it all because you had to go
and there was only one toilet in the house
still it made you feel good to show her off
knowing that every man in the room was watching
and she looked like a million dollars
with her brown hair looking perfect for mussing up
and her eyes suddenly darker and mysterious
and all you wanted to do was take her home and fuck like rabbits

when you look at her now
you remember a time when you were sure
no one else in the world had what you had found in each other
and there were no words to describe the rightness of that feeling
and no words were necessary to show how you felt
you'd always go on feeling like this
knowing that she felt the same way about you
and she'd stare at you for no reason at all
and it was like you could read her mind and her soul right then
and your heart swelled with wonder and pride
because she chose YOU above everyone else
and suddenly you're glad you're home so you can fuck like rabbits

when you look at her now
you remember a time when you swore you'd never get married
and you enjoyed every single minute of not having to check in with somebody
and you spent hours examining the science of lint
and washing clothes wasn't hampered by bits of silk and lace
if the whites turned green, you could get on with your life
knowing that you had more important things to worry about
and you could watch football more often without interruptions
and you would go for hours lying in the sun in peace
and you would dream about cars and women
and you'd envy all the guys who could go home to someone and fuck like rabbits

when you look at her now
you remember a time when you would've made an effort
and she would've thanked you endlessly for trying
and you would do anything to shut her up
and if you made you both late to work you'd laugh it all off
you used to feel that nothing mattered more than the two of you
knowing now that feeling's a long-burnt out flame
and you want to leave but she won't let you go
and you've told her a hundred times why
and she says she needs you still and you hate to see her in tears
and that's when you discover she wants you, but only if you can fuck like rabbits
