Words Unsaid

by Raine Wynd

Published in Page One, the literary magazine of Belleville Township High School West, Belleville, Illinois. This one was partly inspired by real life, but the majority of it came from romance novels. ©1988

Like a dense, gray fog
on a chilly end-of-summer morn,
all the things i wish i had said
before we parted in sorrow
hang heavy in the stillness
of the aching lonely feeling
welled up inside me.

I thought we were perfect:
a beautiful blend of harmony
in a sweet rhythym of melody,
but i know now
how wrong i was.
Our song lacked meaning
with all the important words left unsaid.

I didn't think love needed a voice
love, to me, was sweeter unspoken
and, anyway, i didn't know how
i could tell you what was in my heart --
that my mind was filled with you --
laughing, smiling, loving you --
i knew the words, yet my tongue was tied.

Now you are gone,
and my heart is empty
but i will never forget you --
you, the love i lost
because you doubted my love
(and i took for granted you knew it was true)
because three words were left unsaid.
